I get by with a little help from my friends

June 30, 2010

One of my favorite Lombardi quotes is, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.” I know this speaks more towards an individual – his character, his will, and his internal desire to be great. But after something happened recently within my group of friends I realized this also has everything to do with the people you surround yourself with.

It is easy to be a friend when times are good. However when someone is in a place where life has been cruel, unrelenting, and unexpected, the tables are turned. In this case not only do we make do with what we have internally, but what external support we can count on. And when you have true friends, this becomes an extension of your own being. It can bring a new sense of strength, empowerment, and fortitude that many may not have ever known they could reach.

So yes, we need to apply strengths and reach deep within ourselves, but let us not forget what a privilege, gift, and immeasurable blessing great friends can be.

How many people do lean on to get you through the day?
